For a break from the beach on Maui, be sure to visit Haleakala National Park. Haleakala is the caldera of an enormous volcano, but the park itself extends from stark moonscape like terrain across alpine windswept fields, to the tropical beaches along the east end of the island. A hike into the caldera is quite an adventure, and it is worth being there during the sunrise. Just be sure to dress for windy and rather chilly conditions despite being in Hawaii. A sliver of the trail can be seen way below the ridge-line on the right side of the image. The various mineral deposits (iron for the red hue), produce the bright colors to the cinder cones within the caldera.
